voestalpine Roll Forming’s Farrell plant is shown along Martin Luther King Boulevard. The site is competing with an Indiana location for an $80 million expansion project.
FARRELL – An Austrian company with a steel processing plant in Farrell has named the city as one of two sites in the running for an $80 million expansion, Penn-Northwest Development Corp.’s executive director said Monday.
“This would be a major investment for our area,’’ Rob Wilt, Penn-Northwest’s executive director, said. Penn-Northwest is Mercer County’s lead economic development agency.
The company, voestalpine Roll Forming, has a roll forming plant in Farrell at 250 Martin Luther King Blvd., directly across from the Laskey’s Furniture warehouse.
If the site is chosen for the 150,000-square-foot expansion, it would be on vacant land next to the plant, Wilt said.
It’s expected the expansion could add 50 to 75 jobs, he said. It wasn’t immediately known how many work at the existing plant.
Farrell is in competition with a Jeffersonville, Ind., location. Wilt said. Jeffersonville is just across from Louisville, Ky., along the Ohio River.
The parent company of the Group is voestalpine Giesserei Linz GmbH, which is based in Linz, Austria. A company spokesman didn’t immediately respond to an email Monday. The company is best known as a steelmaker and steel processor.
Jeffersonville also has a voestalpine roll forming plant. The company’s roll forming business is based in Shelbyville, Ky., around a dozen miles east of Louisville.
Roll forming is where sheet metal is rolled into desired shapes for products ranging from kitchen appliances to cars.
With over 51,000 employees globally, voestalpine said on its website it has locations in 50 countries.
No timetable was given on when the company expects to reach a decision.
